„New ways of teaching mathematics and physics - practical and cross-curricular approach”
20-24.08.2012
THEMATIC FIELD OF THE TRAINING: IN-SERVICE TRAINING IN THE FIELD OF SCIENCES
Maths, chemistry & physics
New technologies
INSTITUTION ORGANISING THE TRAINING
NAME OF THE ORGANISATION: University of Ljubljana, Faculty of mathematics and physics
TOWN / CITY: Ljubljana
COUNTRY: Slovenia
WEBSITE: http://mat.fmf.uni-lj.si/index_en.php
Objectives
Many reports show substantial decline in the interest and recruitment of young people into Science and Mathematics studies at a European level as well as low effectiveness of the teaching of these difficult disciplines. The ScienceMath project shows there are still some not enough applied opportunities which can enhance the teaching. The cross-curricular activities are the focus point of suggested improvement of the teaching. According to this the course will aim the following objectives:
* To familiarize participants with examples of good practice in Science and Mathematics teaching demonstrated by work developed under the Sciencemath Comenius 2.1 project.
* To experience how a cross curricular based course may develop in a classroom environment using some exemplary materials.
* To develop the skills necessary to manage the implementation of ScienceMath lessons
* To provide a scientific and language background for math teachers
* To encourage participants to develop teaching materials relevant to their own context and pupils’ ability and to organize such materials
* To provide a variety of research based teaching ideas, practical classroom skills and materials.
* To promote a culture of reflective practice and research among teachers and to facilitate the exchange of good practice and expertise.
* To increase teacher collaboration within the European dimension of science education.
* To show the use of computer based experiments as an essential part of teaching physics
*To use GeoGebra for math and physics
Methodology
The course will be divided in three type of sessions:
A. PLENARY sessions (less than 55% of the seminar):
Theoretical framework will be presented and some result of our teaching methods – their implementations. Certainly the participants will be involved in the following discussion.
B. WORKSHOP sessions:
Exploring ScienceMath materials and other materials. Getting familiar to the experimentation techniques in order to be capable to collect realistic data of phenomena and use them in the teaching of mathematics. The participants will be fully involved in the use of the equipment. Several teaching sequence integrating science-mathematics-ICT issues (mostly physics).
C. WORKING GROUP hands on sessions:
Very similar to WORKSHOP session but with almost no interference of the staff. The participants will be encouraged to take advantage of peers’ collaboration.
D. EVALUATION
The evaluation will recourse the seminar in order to fit as much as possible to the needs of participants.
MATERIALS to be handled to participants:
- A USB memory stick containing the products of ScienceMath project.
- Students worksheets and teacher guide for the exemplary educational material
